Pixel resolutionThe term resolution is often used for a pixel count in digital imaging, even though American, Japanese, and international standards specify that it should not be so used, at least in the digital camera field.[1][2] An image of N pixels high by M pixels wide can have any resolution less than N lines per picture height, or N TV lines. But when the pixel counts are referred to as resolution, the convention is to describe the pixel resolution with the set of two positive integer numbers, where the first number is the number of pixel columns (width) and the second is the number of pixel rows (height), for example as 640 by 480. Another popular convention is to cite resolution as the total number of pixels in the image, typically given as number of megapixels, which can be calculated by multiplying pixel columns by pixel rows and dividing by one million. Other conventions include describing pixels per length unit or pixels per area unit, such as pixels per inch or per square inch. None of these pixel resolutions are true resolutions, but they are widely referred to as such; they serve as upper bounds on image resolution.




According to the same standards, the number of effective pixels that an image sensor or digital camera has is the count of elementary pixel sensors that contribute to the final image, as opposed to the number of total pixels, which includes unused or light-shielded pixels around the edges.



Below is an illustration of how the same image might appear at different pixel resolutions, if the pixels were poorly rendered as sharp squares (normally, a smooth image reconstruction from pixels would be preferred, but for illustration of pixels, the sharp squares make the point better).







An image that is 2048 pixels in width and 1536 pixels in height has a total of 2048×1536 = 3,145,728 pixels or 3.1 megapixels. One could refer to it as 2048 by 1536 or a 3.1-megapixel image.



Unfortunately, the count of pixels isn't a real measure of the resolution of digital camera images, because color image sensors are typically set up to alternate color filter types over the light sensitive individual pixel sensors. Digital images ultimately require a red, green, and blue value for each pixel to be displayed or printed, but one individual pixel in the image sensor will only supply one of those three pieces of information. The image has to be interpolated or demosaiced to produce all three colors for each output pixel.

When I went to buy a TV with Ahmed, I saw this.  When I went to BETT a chap on the HP stand told me about superfast boot ups with a solid state drive..

I also talked to the guy from Bedford who has softaware to run two stations from the same computer.  He mentioned a particular NVidia card , but I'm not sure if I can find the details.  (this review shows that you can get it in the US for same price in dollars as you would pay in pounds. ($1899 in US and 1999pounds in(with VAT).  That difference @ excahnge of $1.60 to the pound id 800 pounds. For that you could fly to New York for a weekend!!

Jan 18 2011 - The Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S is a large 18.4-inch gaming laptop computer with a new Intel 2nd Generation Core i7-2630QM quad-core processor. This Sandy Bridge processor is fast, as are the two 500GB 7200RPM hard drives. While the notebook is very heavy, it can be used as a desktop replacement with excellent gameplay utilizing an NVIDIA GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 graphics card. Unfortunately, the Toshiba X500-Q930S only supports 8GB of memory. However, this attribute can be overlooked due to the overall value and extra features.

Review - Toshiba X500-Q930S 18.4-Inch Gaming Laptop Computer

Image Courtesy ToshibaSo you're transitioning from your beloved gaming desktop to a more portable solution, but hate to be confined to a 15-inch screen? The Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S features a large 18.4-inch TruBrite LCD display that supports 1080p 1920x1080 resolution. This high resolution is excellent for gaming battles.



Visually, the Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S offers the same red and black glossy chassis as seen in previous models. Fortunately, the colors aren't overly distracting and create a unique design compared to mainstream laptops.



Processing power comes from the recently launched 2nd Generation Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core processor using the Mobile Intel HM65 chipset. The CPU has a stock speed of 2.0GHz and 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost technology. This Sandy Bridge processor is a powerful chip and is suitable for a laptop in this price range ($1,899 MSRP).



The Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S also has an abundance of memory - 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM is equipped in this laptop. Unfortunately, the system only supports up to 8GB with two main memory slots. While 8GB of memory is plentiful for gaming and working in a variety of applications, such as Microsoft Office, capping memory at 8GB impedes future upgrades.



But since the Qosmio is built for gaming, you're most likely wondering how good the graphics are. The Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S features the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M video card with 1.5GB of GDDR5 discrete graphics memory. The GTX 460M has 192 shaders and supports DirectX11 for smooth gameplay in the latest games. However, since the system rings in at $1,899, some gamers would prefer the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (seen in the ASUS G73JH) for slightly better performance in demanding games.



Since the Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S is a high performance gaming laptop, storage space must be fast and spacious. The Qosmio doesn't disappoint with two 500GB 7200RPM hard drives. It also makes a great multimedia machine with a Blu-ray drive and HDMI output, so you can watch your favorite Blu-ray movies on a compatible HDTV. Sound quality is also good with built-in Harmon Kardon speakers.



Unfortunately, with an abundance of screen real estate and powerful components comes added weight. This system is very heavy, starting at 10.1 pounds. Don't count on carrying this notebook around for long periods of time unless you're looking to build some muscle. And while battery life is enhanced with a 12-cell pack, don't forget that gaming for a prolonged period of time requires plugging the system in.



Overall, the Toshiba Qosmio X500-Q930S is a nicely equipped desktop replacement. Gaming is a pleasurable experience thanks to the high resolution screen and decent graphics card. While the weight and price are turn-offs, the new Intel Sandy Bridge Core i7-2630QM CPU is one of the top processors on the market today, and the NVIDIA GTX 460M graphics card offers smooth gameplay. Small details, such as including Windows 7 Professional versus Home Premium are also excellent additions to the overall value.

Another excellent member of the O'Reilly book range, this is a superb start for learning the ins and outs of PHP, MySQL and Javascript. It doesn't weigh the reader down with a lot of uneeded information and sets a nice pace for easy learning. I'd already had a small amount of experience in working with PHP and MySQL in the past but within a couple of hours of picking this up I had applied some newly learnt coding practices to an application I was working on. I am quite familer with many of the O'Reilly book range some of which were excellent and some a bit to advance to understand... but i can happily say this book was excellent without a doubt it was very easy to understand and detailed at the same time, it a perfect book for anyone who want to learn PHP, MySQl & JS.

I actually brought this book to code wordpress themes in PHP and after 2 week of reading this book thats what i did and it also shows the power of combining PHP, MySQL & JS together which was really impressive.

Comparison: i my opinion this book excellent quailty is one of many reasons to buy the book, the other being using it as "Future Reference" which in many ways saves you money compares to buying a DUMMIES book which only shows the Basic elements of PHP ect. so wheather you turn from Beginners to pro this Book is for you!

I'd previously bought "Learning PHP & MySQL" from O'Reilly and found it confusing and hard to follow.


This one was completely different. I loved it. It explains things clearly and really helped me to understand. Maybe different people appreciate different styles, but this is the one book that really helped me get to grips with PHP and MySQL (still struggling with Javascript!)

I had general knowledge in PHP from modding and experimenting with Wordpress themes. HTML and CSS wasn't new to me - I work as a web designer, but I'm not perfect with javascript. SQL scared me.

This new O'Reily book filled in my blanks - gave me facts and tips about PHP developing and more self confidence in playing around with MySQL in PHPmyAdmin.

I'd say the things you need to be a great PHP web-developer are experience in HTML+CSS, a great idea, and this book :)

“I am assuming here that there’s near-ubiquity in the provision of registration, tracking, measurement, aggregation of data for performance analysis purposes”.

Of course all companies want to promote useful informal learning (if it’s not at the cost of productive work), but the real Holy Grail is finding a demonstrable link between what has beeen learnt by an employee and performance improvement. Or should we also promote performance evaluation (which means salary increases) based on data from social networks?

LMS is no longer the centre of the universe

OK, so here’s the deal – if learning is work and work is learning, why is organizational learning controlled by a learning management systems (LMS) that isn’t connected to the work being done in the enterprise? Learning is no longer what you do before you go to work, never having to learn anything else in order to do your job. In the 21st century networked economy, learning and working are becoming one.





As Robert Kelley showed over a 20 year study of knowledge workers, we need to keep learning in order to get our jobs done – “What percentage of the knowledge you need to do your job is stored in your own mind?”

1986 ~ 75%.

1997 ~ 20%

2006 ~ 10%

In a networked economy, social learning is how we get things done. Training, based on solid documentation of processes and procedures, works well at lower levels of complexity and we can develop best practices. As complexity increases, we need more tacit knowledge, which cannot be documented. Conversation is a prime medium for the sharing of tacit knowledge and is the foundation for collaborative work. We need to communicate in order to collaborate. This is why organizations need to manage what matters – collaboration.



The LMS framework is being challenged for its supremacy over organizational learning much as heliocentricity showed European civilization that we were not the centre of the galaxy. Jane Hart says that, “what is needed is an organisational system that SUPPORTS and ENABLES this informal approach to learning.” That system is one where the LMS is nothing more than a node in the network, which means that the LMS has to play nice with others (which most do not). The centre of universe has shifted for training & development professionals and they can ignore this shift, as the Catholic church did, or they can become part of the Learning Reformation.

Isn’t a stand-alone (somewhat or much-detached & centralized) LMS looking like a moated fortress ? Shouldn’t the central focus of any future “LMS” be executing its excellence as a warehouse for the delivery of bits on-demand ( courses and learning objects etc.). to the network. Shouldn’t increasingly the LMS serve the network both through the individual and increasingly, informal and / or impromptu groups (see services such as Zorap.com). Shouldn’t any LMS be seeking to open itself to the ecosystem and just become one specific part of it, instead of defining a closed domain of mostly-structured formal learning ?



Isn’t the network the future of learning ?

Description of How SCORM works

The Shareable Content Object Reference Model, or 'SCORM', is a way of organising data for e-learning. It's an open standard maintained by the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative ('ADL'). Being a popular open standard, many institutions use it, in the same way they use .pdf documents, spreadsheets and .jpg images.




I suppose the first question you might ask is: why have a standard for e-learning at all?



An LMS will need to know how to present things such as pdfs, web pages, video, and other resources as courses. This is where SCORM comes in. It is a standard format that tells the LMS how to present a set of resources as a course or several courses.



Now let's say you create a course in one LMS, and then realise you want to run the same course on a different LMS, at a different institution, on a different remote server.



If both LMSs supports the SCORM standard, that means your course can be transferred from the first LMS to the second LMS with minimal fuss. Further, most good content development systems produce resources that meets the SCORM standard, so content created using them can be added to any SCORM course. More than that, if two courses had, say, videos or web pages in common, then those courses could share those resources.







How does it work?





The e-learning 'resources' (usually files such as web pages, pdfs, videos, audio or images) are placed in a folder or directory. The resources are then described in a SCORM 'XML manifest file' called 'imsmanifest.xml'.



This file tells an LMS what to do with all the content, how to present it, how the course is organised and so on. Then all these files, along with any necessary schema files (.xsd and .dtd files that are used to 'validate' the manifest file) are packaged into a 'zip' archive. This archive is called a SCORM 'content package'.



If this sounds a little complicated, don't worry. There is software for automatically generating these content packages, and they will be able to do most of the technical work for you; leaving you to concentrate on the actual course content and organisation.







Resources





As I said, most resources are web pages, images, style sheets, pdf documents, videos, and so on. Files used to present a course, in other words. In SCORM terms, these are called 'assets' or 'resources'.



Resources are defined in the manifest file, along with the other files they depend on. A web page resource might contain references to image resources, for example.



Resource urls are relative to the location of the manifest file. Metadata (information such as names and descriptions) can be added concerning elements of a content package, so you could name a resource; a web page might be named 'Introduction to SCORM', for instance.



Resources can also be classified as 'launchable'. Launchable resources present course content to a student (usually in a browser), calling on other resources to complete the presentation. A classic example would be a simple html web page that makes use of images, movies, and so on.

AAS Portal Project (Mawhiba)

A milestone agreement that will develop and create a National Electronic Portal to unleash the potential of gifted young Saudis has been signed between the King Abdul Aziz and His Companions Foundation for the Gifted (Mawhiba) and Arabian Advanced Systems (Naseej).




This agreement firmly establishes one of Mawhiba's core projects in its strategic plan to develop a culture of innovation and creativity in the rapidly expanding youth segment of the Kingdom's population. Through the portal, visitors will have access to unique services, information resources and libraries rich in scientific information.



"We ensured the application of the best solutions and specifications that will both optimize the functions of the portal and deliver the highest performance levels by using top notch technologies," said the secretary-general of the foundation, Dr. Khaled ibn Abdullah AI-Sabti. He added that the creation of the portal was entirely in line with the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah in building and developing the culture of innovation throughout the Kingdom so that the gifted are able to use their talents to serve their nation.



The portal will use Microsoft Share Point 2007 technology and consequently strategies concerning the portal's technical features have been outlined in close cooperation with Microsoft Saudi Arabia. Microsoft assisted in the selection of the portal's local development team and will continue to provide support to the foundation on all technical issues related to the project.



Naseej has been selected to implement the project. Eng. Abdul Jabbar AI-Abdul Jabbar, CEO of Arabian Advanced Systems (Naseej), said that he considered the project entirely consistent with the development and modernization plans for Saudi Arabia. "We are proud to be part of this program, which offers vital services to develop our society and serve our children and brothers. He added that " Naseej would make every effort to deliver a portal that made everyone proud and "to make this project a reference for creativity and talent all over the Arab world".



Speaking for Microsoft, Dr. Khaled AI-Dhaher, GM of Microsoft Saudi Arabia, explained that "one of the main aspects of Microsoft's policy and the basic rules of our work is providing full support to young talent and creativity:' He said it was a privilege to offer Microsoft's expertise to help reach the highest possible levels of efficiency, to meet the social expectations of Microsoft's clients and to build a society that cares for its individuals.



The portal, www.mawhiba.org.sa. Joins other pioneering projects the foundation hopes will reinforce the Kingdom's moves toward becoming a knowledge-based society. The foundation recognizes that the development of talent, innovation and creativity are the pillars that will support the future growth of Saudi Arabia.

On Wednesday at 3DTLC I will be doing a Chapter by Chapter Highlight and cover 4 or five cases to demonstrate how early adopters are leveraging 3D to improve their competitive position in the market.



Here is a short rundown of the Chapters:

Part I: Exploring the Possibilities

The first part of this book revolves around three words: Progress, Problems, and Possibilities.



Chapter 1, Here Comes the Immersive Internet, answers the following questions: What is the Immersive Internet, and how is it impacting the businesses that the learning function serves? It describes how Immersive Internet technology has progressed to a point at which it is beginning to redefine both society and industry. This chapter also examines how business-as-usual is becoming “business unusual” as a result of the convergence of four technology vectors that are driving the business environment towards the creation of new economic platforms based on social production.



Chapter 2, Learning to Change, answers the following questions: What is wrong with the learning function’s current approach to addressing business unusual, and why must it change? It describes the problems that a modern-day organization faces due to its inability to adapt and change as rapidly as the environment within which it operates. This chapter also highlights the growing disconnect between the learning needs of the modern-day enterprise and the ability of the traditional learning function to address them.



Chapter 3, Escaping Flatland, answers the following questions: What is 3D learning, and why is it better suited to meet the needs of business unusual? It explores the possibilities of a new learning paradigm that is enabled by the same Immersive Internet technologies that are revolutionizing business. This chapter also introduces two vignettes that compare a “Flatland” 2D learning experience to an immersive and engaging 3D learning experience.

As was the case in building a house, once the possibility space has been explored, the next step focuses on architecture.



Part II: Building a Blueprint

The second part of this book revolves around three words: Principles, Archetypes, and Examples.



Chapter 4, Architecting Learning Experiences, answers the following questions: What are the 3D learning design principles, and how are they applied to create a 3D learning experience blueprint? It describes the key design principles required to build engaging 3D learning experiences. This chapter also presents a comprehensive 3D learning architecture that can be applied to create a blueprint that ensures alignment and balance in the design of compelling 3D learning experiences.



Chapter 5, Designing by Archetype, answers the following question: How can learning archetypes be applied as building blocks in the design of engaging 3D learning experiences? It describes eleven learning archetypes that form the basic building blocks for creating 3D learning experiences. This chapter also presents comprehensive definitions of each archetype and provides examples of how the building blocks can be applied to create compelling 3D learning experiences.



Chapter 6, Learning from Experience, answers the following questions: Who has successfully designed 3D learning experiences, and what can be learned from their experience? It describes nine case studies of successful 3D learning experience designs and maps these designs back to the archetypes that were used to create them.



As was the case in building a house, once the blueprint has been created, the next step focuses on execution.



Part III: Breaking New Ground

The third part of this book revolves around three words: Process, Adoption, and Rules



Chapter 7, Overcoming Being Addled by ADDIE, answers the following question: How does the traditional ADDIE process change when it is applied to create 3D learning experiences? It describes how the existing ADDIE process must be augmented to address the nuances associated with analyzing, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating 3D learning experiences.



Chapter 8, Steps to Successful Enterprise Adoption, answers the following question: What key steps are required to drive adoption of 3D learning experiences within the enterprise? It describes the steps required to drive adoption of 3D learning experiences by mapping them to the diffusion of innovation attractiveness criteria: Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity, Trialability, and Observability.



Chapter 9, Rules from Revolutionaries, answers the following questions: Who else has successfully driven 3D learning adoption, and what can be learned from their experience? It presents four essays from front-line revolutionaries who share their insights on how they changed the rules and convinced their organizations to adopt 3D learning.



Part IV: Just Beyond the Horizon

The final part of this book revolves around one word: Future.



Chapter 10, Back to the Future, answers the following questions: What’s next for 3D learning, and what will things look like in 2020? It describes a maturity model that argues that immersive technologies will evolve from learning to eventually encompassing all work activity and how you can move your organization toward that eventuality. It also presents two essays that envision the future of 3D learning from two of the industry’s leading visionaries.



In short, the ten chapters in this book can be summarized in ten simple words: Progress, Problems, Possibilities, Principles, Archetypes, Examples, Processes, Adoption, Rules, and Future.
